As preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, a significant focus is being placed on the playing surfaces at each of the 16 venues. FIFA has mandated the use of advanced hybrid grass pitches, a requirement that will see new playing fields installed or existing ones upgraded at stadiums like AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, to meet the global governing body's stringent standards.

These state-of-the-art pitches are predominantly natural grass, comprising approximately 95% real turf, with synthetic fibers woven in for enhanced durability and stability. This innovative design, reportedly researched and developed in Tennessee, aims to prevent issues such as divots during intense gameplay, providing a consistent and high-quality surface regardless of whether matches are played in open-air stadiums or under domes, or in varying climates across North America.

The specific grass varieties will be tailored to local conditions.
